The concept of payments for environmental services (PES) has emerged as a way of involving beneficiaries of forest ecosystem services in the financing of their provision. PES systems are newly developed economic instruments that require users of forest services and consumers of forest products to financially contribute to the costs of their provision. The SylvaMED project investigated the possibilities of using PES systems to satisfy the various demands from the public, forest owners, and other stakeholders on Mediterranean forest ecosystems. To meet this call, the partners used questionnaires, interviews, and comparative analysis of legislation documents to frame the set of forest ecosystem services and to identify the existing economic and financial instruments for supporting the sustainable use of Mediterranean forests.
